Martin County West will be on the road to start the Section 2A baseball tournament Thursday as the Mavericks head to New Ulm to face Minnesota Valley Lutheran in a 5 p.m. game at Mueller Park.
The 12th-seeded Mavericks have a 3-12 record, while the fifth-seeded Chargers are 10-9. The teams did not meet during the regular season.
MCW enters postseason on a five-game losing streak with the latest game being a 22-7 loss to Windom on Friday in Welcome.
MVL hasn’t played since being swept in a doubleheader by LeSueur-Henderson at home last Thursday.
The first round of the tournament is single elimination.
Thursday’s winners advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament that begins on Tuesday, again at the site of higher-seeded team.
If MCW wins over MVL, the Mavericks would face either fourth-seeded Madelia or 13th-seeded Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey.
New Ulm Cathedral is seeded first, Springfield second and Cleveland third.
