MCW teams involved in no-nos and more

The Martin County West softball and baseball teams were both in no-hitters in shortened run-rule games on the road on Friday, with one on each side of the no-no.
Maddie Carlson and Sydney Clow combined to hold Madelia without a hit in a four-inning, 16-0 win although they did face the minimum number of batters. The Blackhawks’ first batter of the game reached on an error and would later be out trying to steal second.
Carlson struck out seven in three innings and Clow fanned one in her inning.
Carlson had two hits and four runs batted in. Bailey Larson and Emily Schettler also had two hits. Courtney Anderson hit a three-run home run.
In St. James, the MCW baseball team did score a run without a hit but lost 11-1 in five innings to the host Saints in the opening game of the Howard Schmidtke Wood Bat Tournament. Breyden Soderman walked one and struck out five for St. James.
The Mavericks scored their run in the fourth inning when Preston Cepress reached second on an error, moved to third on a groundout by Michael McCorkell and scored on Noah Meixell’s sacrifice fly.
Jackson County Central’s baseball team lost a nonconference game to Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial 5-2 on Senior Night at Wacker Field. The Huskies did have the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh.
Ben Gallagher, Jace Jorgensen, Talan Holm and Kash Gilbert each had a hit for JCC. Carson Doescher took the pitching loss for the Huskies.
Martin County West’s golf teams were at Madelia Golf Course for an 18-hole quadrangular.
The boys were fourth as a team, led by Knox Larson, who was fourth out of 23 golfers with an 80. The Mavericks did not have a complete girls team. Morgan McCorkell shot 107.
Local racers placed second and third in the 20-lapo 305 sprint feature at Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa on Friday.
Hunter Hanson of Lakefield was second and Brandon Halverson of Jackson was third. Carter Heiskell of Canton, S.D. was first.
Earlier, Halverson had won his heat and Hanson was second in his.
Also Friday, the Toronto Tempo played their first-ever WNBA game, losing at home 68-65 to the Washington Mystics.
