
Jackson County Central advanced to the semifinals of the state football tournament for the third straight year and the ninth time in school history Friday night as the Huskies defeated Central (Norwood Young America) 34-7 in a quarterfinal game at Pesonen Stadium at Orono High School in Long Lake.
The Huskies, 11-0, advance to the semifinals at 9 a.m. next Friday at U.S. Bank Stadium vs. Kimball. The Cubs (11-0) shut out Moose Lake/Willow River 38-0 Friday.
In the other semifinal, Chatfield (11-0) plays Staples-Motley (11-0) at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The winners will play for the state title as part of Prep Bowl at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22.
Roman Voss went 73 yards for a touchdown on JCC’s first play from scrimmage in the game. On the Huskies’ second possession he gained 23 yards, was injured on that play and did not return.
Ben Dahlin returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and Jackson County Central led 14-0 after the first quarter and that was also the halftime score.
Grant Freking threw third quarter touchdown passes, a 15-yarder to Ben Gallagher and a 23-yarder to Carson Pohlman and JCC led 28-0 after three.
Tavion Diggs closed out the scoring for the Huskies on a 13-yard run for a 34-0 lead. The Raiders scored their points with 9:05 remaining.
Jackson County Central had 381 yards offense, 255 rushing and 126 passing while limiting Norwood Young America to 236 yards (26-210).
Voss led JCC in rushing with 96 yards on two carries. Clay Malchow had 80 yards on 18 tries.
Freking was 7-for-15 passing. Gallagher, Pohlman and Ben Dahlin had two catches apiece.

State volleyball tournament
Big South Conference champion Marshall advanced to the Class 3A championship match at the state volleyball tournament at Xcel Energy Center Friday with a 3-0 win over Stewartville. Set scores were 25-22, 25-16, 25-16.
Avery Fahl had 11 kills, 12 digs and 19 set assists for the Tigers. Reese Drake had 19 kills, 11 digs, four set assists and one block. Brooke Gillingham had 24 set assists.
Marshall will play Alexandria for the state title at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The Cardinals are coached by Marshall High School graduate Mary Byrne, who coached the Tigers for two seasons in the 1990s.
