JCC, MCW both win softball titles

The Jackson County Central and Martin County West softball teams are similar:
Both went 3-0 to win a tournament on Saturday. The Huskies won the Shelly Hotzler Invite and the Mavericks won a tourney hosted by Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove.
JCC outscored its opponents 37-3 Saturday. MCW outscored its foes 36-3.
Both teams have a record of 17-1.
Each team is state-ranked and plays a state-ranked team along Highway 22 on Monday. The Class AA No. 4 Huskies are at Class AAA No. 4 Mankato East and the Class A No. 3 Mavericks are at Class A No. 1 United South Central.
In Jackson, JCC defeated Albert Lea 12-1 in five innings, Chatfield 15-0 in three innings and Pipestone 10-2.
In Walnut Grove, MCW downed MACCRAY 19-0 in four innings, Lakeview 9-2 and Yellow Medicine East 8-1.
The Martin County West baseball team closed out play in the Howard Schmidtke Wood Bat Classic in St. James with an 11-1 loss in five innings to United South Central.
Two JCC grads competed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference track and field meet in Duluth.
Peyton Hanson, a junior at the University of Sioux Falls, tied for first place in pole vault with Elvira Collvin of Minnesota State as both cleared 12-8.
Also, Andrew Boyum, a senior at Concordia-St. Paul, was 20th out of 39 runners in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:37.69 in his final college race.
