
Both Jackson County Central basketball teams were winners Friday night to highlight the local sports scene.
Junior Weston Rowe reached the 1,000th point mark for his career as the boys won 96-83 at home over Redwood Valley. He finished with 20 points as one of four Huskies to score in double figures.
Grant Freking had a double double of 25 points and 13 rebounds, Roman Voss scored 18 and Ben Gallagher 13. Aiven Farmer had eight rebounds while Gallagher had six assists and Voss five.
The win is the fifth straight for Class 2A fourth-ranked JCC puts their record at 19-2. The Huskies are scheduled to host Class 2A No. 2 Waseca (21-0) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Jackson County Central girls were 60-21 road winners at Waseca. Rylie Cother led the Huskies in scoring with 31 points.
It was JCC’s 14th straight win and gives the Huskies a 17-6 record.
JCC had two entries in the section individual girls wrestling tournament in Redwood Falls. Aubrey Carnesi was 1-2 at 130 pounds and Audreina Brown was 0-2 at 130.
From Martin County, Kate Kolbe had a bye at 152 and then won twice by fall. She’ll be in the semifinals when wrestling resumes Saturday. The top two advance to state.
Big South Conference East Division champion Martin County Area had a season high score Friday but it wasn’t quite enough to lift the Magic past Worthington in the Big South Conference gymnastics championship dual in Fairmont.
The Class A 8th-ranked Trojans edged No. 16 MCA 138.875-138.225 in the meet at Live Fit Sport & Wellness Center in Fairmont.
Lillie Schultz had three first-place finishes for MCA as she won vault (9.25), floor (9.10) and the all around (35.475). She was also second on bars (8.625).
In college wrestling, Division III No. 3 Augsburg defeated Division II No. 7 Augustana 22-9.
Martin County West graduate Jaxson Rohman won a decision at 125 pounds for the Vikings and Jackson County Central grad Payton Handevidt lost at 165.
Also, Heron Lake native Hobie Hedquist made 19 saves on 24 shots for the No. 16 North Dakota men’s hockey team lost 6-4 to Np. 20 Colorado College in Grand Forks. The Tigers' final goal was an empty netter.
