
Jackson County Central broke open what had been a competitive game in the first half with a flurry of touchdowns early in the third quarter and went on to beat Pipestone 48-7 in the championship game of the Section 3AA football playoffs last (Friday) night at Trojan Field in Worthington.
The Huskies led 18-0 at halftime and then scored 30 points in the first 4 minutes and 1 second of the third quarter to break the game open.
Ben Dahlin returned the second half kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and Clay Malchow ran in the two-point conversion after JCC had been pushed back five yards for a penalty on the two-point conversion and the Huskies were up 26-0 just 14 seconds into the third quarter.
Roman Voss broke a couple of Pipestone tackles and went 39 yards for a TD and Gage Johnson ran in the conversion and it was 34-0 with 9:39 left in the third.
Pipestone left the ball free on the ensuing kickoff and JCC recovered the loose ball on the one-yard line and Tavion Diggs went into the end zone from there. Ben Gallagher kicked the extra point to make it 41-0 with 9:32 remaining in the third.
Grant Freking ended the scoring flourish with a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown and Gallagher’s PAT made it 48-0 with 7:59 to go in the third.
Pipestone scored its points with 2:47 left in the third.
It was 10-0 after the first quarter. The Huskies recorded a safety when the ball went through the punter’s legs on the snap and JCC tackled the punter in the end zone.
With 1:01 left in the first quarter Voss scored on a five-yard run and he then threw to Aiven Farmer for the two-point conversion.
It stayed 10-0 until Voss threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Carson Pohlman and Johnson ran in the conversion with 1:10 to go in the half.
Voss led the Huskies in rushing with 113 yards on 10 carries. Johnson had 91 yards on only four tries. Voss was 1-for-2 passing for the 26-yard TD. Grant Freking was 2-8 for 12 yards out.
JCC will play in the state Class 2A tournament. It’s the third straight trip to state for the Huskies and the 11th overall.
Under the new state tournament format, the teams are seeded 1-4 among the south teams and north teams.
Three of the four teams in the south are undefeated with the Huskies and Chatfield both being 10-0, while Norwood Young America is 11-0. Triton is 8-2.
The teams will be seeded and pairings determined this (Saturday) morning, JCC will play either Thursday at Hastings or Friday at Orono High School.
