The Jackson County Central boys basketball team learned who it will play to start the state Class 2A boys basketball tournament Saturday and some local athletes were making news on bigger stages around the country.
State boys basketball
JCC was one of the three unseeded teams for the state tournament and the Huskies drew another Howl of Huskies (research indicates that’s what a group of Huskies is called) in the quarterfinals, defending champion and second-seeded Albany.
The Huskies will play the Huskies at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Target Center in downtown Minneapolis. JCC has a 21-7 record, while Albany is 28-2.
Also on that side of the 2A bracket at Target Center, third-seeded Lake City (24-5) plays Pelican Rapids (24-5) at 8 p.m.
In Class 2A games at Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota, top-seeded Breck (28-1) plays Waseca (20-10) at 6 p.m. and fourth-seeded Pequot Lakes (26-4) meets fifth-seeded Minnehaha Academy (14-14) at 8 p.m.
College all-Americans
Two former Martin County Red Bulls earned all-American honors in their respective NCAA wrestling tournaments.
Jaxson Rohman of Augustana placed second at 125 pounds at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Park City, Kan. It’s the second straight year Rohman has been the national runner-up at that weight class.
Blake Jagodzinske of Augsburg placed fifth at 157 pounds at the NCAA Division III tournament in LaCrosse. Also, he was honored as the Elite 90 Award winner for Divisin III. That award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.
Hot goaltenders
A pair of goalies from the area led their teams to wins Saturday night.
Heron Lake native Hobie Hedquist Hedquist got the win in goal for the second straight night as the freshman led North Dakota to a 7-1 win over Miami University in Grand Forks. He made 28 saves as the Fighting Hawks won the National Collegiate Hockey Conference best-of-three series in two straight.
UND advances to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff next weekend at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Also Saturday, Sherburn native Carsen Musser was named First Star of the Game as he made 34 stops as the Madison Capitols were 4-1 winners over the Des Moines Buccaneers in a United States Hockey League game.
Musser also had an assist.
