
Thursday was a busy day for postseason competition for area athletes.
Track and field teams from Jackson County Central and Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin competed in the Section 2A South Sub-Section meet in Wells.
The Huskies are sending 37 entries to the Section 2A meet on Saturday, May 31 at Mankato West High School, 19 girls and 18 boys. JCC was second in the team standings for both the girls and boys.
Jackson County Central’s boys had two first-place finishes and also had a school record.
Clay Malchow won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (42.03) and Ben Dahlin was first in the 200 meters (22.47).
Quinn Landherr set a school record in the pole vault as cleared 13 feet, 3 inches and placed second.
MCW/B-O is sending nine entries to the section meet, six boys and three girls.
Bear Kosbab had the top finish for the Mavericks in the boys meet, placing second in the 100 meters (11.62).
The top finish for the MCW/B-O girls was a fourth from Ava Thate in the 100 meters (13.46).
Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton won the girls team title and Maple River won the boys.
JCC junior Tavin Miller advanced to the second round of the Section 3AA boys golf tournament at Oakdale Golf Club in Buffalo Lake.
Miller shot an 83 and will play in the final round Wednesday, also at Oakdale. The Huskies were 12th in the team standings. The top five teams advance.
New London-Spicer has an 11-stroke lead over New Ulm in the team standings.
The JCC softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Windom 6-1 in the second round of the Section 3AA tournament in Jackson. The top-seeded Huskies had a first-round bye, while the fourth-seeded Eagles had won by the same 6-1 score over fifth-seeded Minneota/Canby earlier in the day.
Hadley Wachal went the distance to earn the pitching win, allowing three hits and striking out 13, including reaching 400 strikeouts for her career.
Bailey Finck and Miley VanDeVere both homered in the sixth for JCC.
Martin County West’s baseball season came to an end in the first round of the Section 2A baseball tournament with a 10-0 loss in five innings to Minnesota Valley Lutheran.
Lucas Larson had the lone hit for the Mavericks, a single to lead off the fourth inning. He also took the pitching loss for MCW.
