Jackson County Central scored 28 points in the third quarter after a sluggish first half and the Huskies were 42-13 winners over Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial in the football opener for both teams Friday at Swearingen Field.
The Knights had a 7-0 lead early and the game was tied 7-7 at halftime. JCC scored 42 straight points for a 42-7 before the Knights scored the final points of the game.
Brenan Runge threw three touchdown passes for the Huskies, connecting with Bryson Powers on plays of 32 and 6 yards and throwing an 8-yard TD pass to Sam Brinkman.
Clay Malchow recovered a kickoff in the end zone for a touchdown, Ben Dahlin scored on a 56-yard run and Tavion Diggs scored from four yards out. Jack Sadusky kicked three extra points and Leo Feichtinger one. Seth Stai ran in a two-point conversion.
Martin County West opened its football season with a 21-0 loss at Canby.
Rylan Cutler was credited with 12 tackles and Riley Allen eight for the Mavericks.
Cross country
Jackson County Central’s girls were second in the team standings and the boys 10th at the Paul Metcalf Invitational in Mountain Lake Friday.
Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey won the girls team title with 55 points, with the Huskies second with 67.
JCC had two medal winners for placing in the top 15 as Elese Paplow was sixth with a 5K time of 21:27.85 and Cora Pauling eighth in 21:51.23.
Class 2A second-ranked Luverne won the boys team title.
Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin ran at the Augustana Twilight meet in Sioux Falls.
Ryan Pierson finished 29th out of 422 runners in the boys meet with a 5K time of 16:42.26.
In the 5K girls event, Katie Hartke placed 137th out of 334 runners in 21:47.69.
Two Jackson County Central graduates ran in the college portion of the Augustana meet.
Andrew Boyum, a sophomore at Iowa Central, was 82nd in a field of 358 runners in the men’s race with a four-mile time of 21:06.93.
Also, Olivia Anderson, a sophomore with the Minnesota State women’s team, was 170th of 357 runners with a 5K clocking of 21:06.02.
College news

Jackson County Central graduate Alaina Wolff had seven digs, three set assists and one service ace for South Dakota in a 3-0 loss to No. 3 Louisville Friday in Columbia, Missouri. The Coyotes play the host Tigers Saturday and Northern Kentucky Sunday.
JCC grad Sadie Voss had nine kills for the University of Sioux Falls in a 3-1 loss to Emporia State and 10 kills in a 3-0 win over William Jewell at the Kansas City Klassic. The Cougars play No. 13 Northwest Missouri today.
Another JCC graduate, Alicia Brandt, had three blocks, three kills and three digs for Waldorf in a 3-1 win over Clarke and followed that up with nine kills and five blocks in a 3-1 win over Graceland. The Warriors are 6-0 and play St. Ambrose and William Penn today.
