
The Jackson County Central softball team won the first of two games vs. state-ranked teams to end the regular season Thursday, beating Class 1A No. 10 Wabasso 12-1 in five innings. The Huskies, who are No. 9 in Class 2A, host Class 3A No. 3 New Ulm in the Big South Conference championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Mady Wachal was the winning pitcher, allowing one hit and striking out 12.
Brielle Tufvesson had two hits for the Huskies, both doubles. Lauren Johnson and Cora Pauling also had two hits apiece.
Martin County West’s softball team lost to Class 1A No. 4 New Ulm Cathedral 11-0 in the Tomahawk Valley Conference championship game at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
The game was scoreless through three innings, with the Greyhounds scoring one run in the fourth, three in the fifth, one in the sixth and six in the seventh.
Hannah Rosenberg had two hits including a double and Maddie Carlson also had a hit for MCW. The Mavericks will open the Section 2A tournament on Tuesday in Welcome.
The JCC baseball team split a pair of nonconference games at Wacker Field, beating Hayfield 7-4 and losing to Class 1A No. 1 Springfield 11-0 in six innings.
Gage Johnson was the winning pitcher vs. the Vikings, striking out 10 in 5.2 innings. Ryan Fricke and Carson Doscher finished the game for the Huskies. Kash Gilbert had three hits for JCC.
Jackson County Central had five hits vs. the Tigers. The Huskies close out the regular season at home vs. Class 1A No. 2 Murray County Central at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Also Thursday, the Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin track and field teams both placed sixth at the Tomahawk Valley Conference meet in Sleepy Eye.
The boys had three first-place finishes and Bear Kosbab was part of each.
He won the 100 meters (12.07) and 200 meters (24.00) and ran the final leg of the winning 4x100 team (46.34). Lixon Forsberg, Kale Larson and Lucas Larson ran the first three legs.
The top finishes for the MCW/BO girls were a pair of third-place finishes.
Evelynn Christenson was third in the 1600 meters (6:04.54) and she ran the anchor leg of the 4x800-meter relay. Running the first three legs were Maddison Lyon, Inga Olson and Katelynn Kennedy.
The Mavericks will compete in the Section 2A South Sub-Section meet next Thursday in Wells.
