Friday night was a good night for local basketball teams as both the Jackson County Central girls and boys basketball teams were winners, as was the Martin County West girls basketball team.
Also Friday, the Windom Area boys hockey team dropped a home game, a JCC grad made her collegiate track and field debut and a Sherburn native had a good game in the United States Hockey League.
The Jackson County Central girls basketball team is 2-0 after a 71-46 win over Pipestone in Jackson.
Rylie Cother scored 30 points for the Huskies and Kylee Wenzel scored 17.
JCC’s boys opened their season with a 67-65 win at Blue Earth Area.
Four Huskies scored in double digits as Aiven Farmer scored 16 points, Grant Freking 14, Weston Rowe 12 and Ben Gallagher 10.
MCW’s girls basketball team is 3-0 after a 55-42 Valley Conference win over Nicollet in Sherburn.
Emily Anderson scored 27 points for the Mavericks.
Windom Area’s boys hockey team scored the first goal but Prairie Centre scored the final three as the North Stars defeated the Eagles 3-1.
Jackson County Central graduate Peyton Hanson, a freshman at the University of Sioux Falls, competed in her first collegiate track and field meet Friday, tying for 10th in the pole vault at the SDSU Holiday Open in Brookings. She cleared 10-0 1/4.
At Middleton, Wis. Friday, Carsen Musser got the win and was named the No. 1 Star as the Madison Capitols were 6-1 winners over the Chicago Steel in a United States Hockey League game. He made 19 saves.
Saturday
Both the JCC and Martin County wrestling teams open their seasons at tournaments today (Saturday).
The Huskies head to Glencoe for the Don Hall Invitational, while the Red Bulls will be in Blue Earth for the Dick Maher Invitational.
