Jackson County Central’s boys basketball team finished its regular-season schedule Friday night, while the girls learned the opponent for their first postseason game. Also, the team competition was held at the state gymnastics meet.
Boys basketball
JCC held off Pipestone 76-73 on the road to put its record at 22-4.
The Huskies will likely be the number one seed for the Section 3AA South Sub-Section tournament. That would give them a bye in the quarterfinals, and they would not play until the semifinals on Tuesday, March 4.
Pairings should be announced on Monday.
Roman Voss led Jackson County Central with 28 points, with Grant Freking scoring 19 and Weston Rowe nine.
Girls basketball
JCC’s girls basketball team had a bye Friday as the number one seed in the South Sub-Section of Section 3AA.
The Huskies will play Redwood Valley at 6 p.m. Tuesday in St. James after the fourth-seeded Cardinals downed fifth-seeded St. James Area 76-61 Friday.
On the other side of the South Sub-Section Friday, second-seeded Fairmont beat seventh-seeded Luverne for the second time in four days 61-37 and sixth-seeded Pipestone upended third-seeded Windom 65-64.
Fairmont and Pipestone play in Tuesday’s second semifinal. The winners will play at 8 p.m. Thursday at Southwest Minnesota State University.
In the upper bracket of the North Sub-Section Friday, No. 1 seed New London-Spicer beat No. 8 Eden Valley-Watkins 81-42 and No. 5 Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta downed No. 4 Montevideo 42-39. On the lower side of the bracket, No. 2 Minnewaska Area topped No. 7 Litchfield 63-25 and No. 3 Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg defeated No. 6 Paynesville 65-59.
The North semifinals Tuesday at Willmar High School have NLS facing MACA and Minnewaska taking on KMS. Those winners play at 6 p.m. Thursday at SMSU.
The section championship game is Thursday, March 6 at SMSU.
State gymnastics
Worthington was eighth in the Class A team competition at the state gymnastics meet with a team total of 132.225.
Detroit Lakes won its sixth state championship in school history with 145.625. The Lakers won five straight state titles from 2015-2019.
The race for the Class AA title was a tight one with Owatonna first with 146.825, New Prague second with 146.45 and Cretin-Derham Hall third with 146.425.
The individual portion is Saturday.
Romi Rosenbrook of Jackson County Central will compete on bars and floor, while Martin County Area’s Lillie Schultz will compete on bars and beam.

Girls hockey
Madyson Girard scored at 10:30 of overtime to give Marshall a 3-2 win over Fergus Falls in a consolation semifinal at the state girls hockey tournament at TRIA Rink in St. Paul.
Aubree Metheny scored in the second period and Ava Kolander in the third for the Tigers, now 23-4-2. Marshall faces Proctor/Hermantown (21-7-1) for the consolation title at 11 a.m. Saturday at TRIA Rink.
Dodge County (23-3-2) and Warroad (26-3) play in the Class A championship game at 4 p.m. The Class AA championship game at 7 p.m. has Edina (25-3-1) meeting Hill-Murray (24-6).
