Friday night was a busy one for current high school student-athletes as well as some area graduates.
The Jackson County Central wrestling team went 1-2 on the opening day of The Clash in La Crosse. The Huskies opened with a 36-27 loss to Liberty, Ariz., defeated Holmen, Wis. 45-30 and then fell 42-25 to Washington, Ill.
Four wrestlers were 3-0 on the day, Kayden Eller, Isaac Rodriguez, Nolan Ambrose and Ryan Haley.
JCC wrestles three more duals Saturday in Division 6, which is for teams that placed sixth in their eight-team bracket Friday. The Huskies wrestle Apple Valley, Glenbard, Ill. North and Prairie du Chien, Wis.
On the second day of competing three days in a row, the Martin County wrestling team split a pair of duals in Fulda, beating Worthington 41-31 and losing to Fulda/Murray County Central 51-18.
Both Jackson County Central basketball teams picked up a win over Section 3AA foe Redwood Valley.
The girls won 58-46 in Jackson behind 37 points from Rylie Cother.
JCC’s boys were 60-59 winners in Redwood Falls with two players recording a double double. Weston Rowe had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Aiven Farmer had 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Huskies were only 2-for-18 from the free-throw line.
The Martin County West girls basketball team won a Valley Conference contest in Sherburn, beating Madelia 57-35 with Emily Anderson scoring 23 points.
Windom Area’s hockey teams came out on opposite ends of a one-goal game.
The Eagle girls won a Big South Conference game 2-1 in overtime at Windom Arena on Ella Dockter’s goal at 4:25 of the extra frame. Meanwhile, the Windom boys lost a nonconference road game at Becker/Big Lake 6-5.
Some former local wrestlers were in action at the National College Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals in Cedar Falls.
Martin County West graduate Jaxson Rohman of Augustana, the top-rated Division II 118-pounder, won both of his matches as the Vikings advanced to today’s (Saturday’s) semifinals with a pair of wins.
Jackson County Central grad Payton Handevidt was in the lineup at 157 for Augustana.
In the Division III National Duals, JCC grad Kie Anderson wrestled his first match of the season for Concordia-Moorhead.
Also, MCW graduate Blake Jagodzinske of Augsburg, rated eighth at 157, wrestled for the first time since mid-November and won by major decision as the Auggies advanced to the semifinals.
Lucas Jagodzinske wrestled in a different tournament Friday and won his weight class.
Two former area athletes were in goal for their teams last night.
Heron Lake native Hobie Hedquist made his first official start for the North Dakota men’s hockey team. He had played in two exhibition games.
Hedquist made 23 saves as the fourth-ranked Fighting Hawks defeated Alaska 6-4 in Grand Forks.
Also, Sherburn native Carsen Musser was between the pipes for the Madison Capitols and had 27 stops in their 3-2 United States Hockey League loss at the Sioux City Musketeers.
