This is the first year that teams have been seeded for the high school football playoffs in Minnesota.
In each of those classes, teams were split into south and north for the quarterfinal round with the 1 seed playing the 4 and the 2 seed playing the 3. Teams will then cross bracket for the semifinals.
On the first of three days of quarterfinals there were 11 games Thursday. The results were as close as possible with the higher seeded team winning six games and the lower seed winning five.
In Class 2A where Jackson County Central plays, it was a 1-1 split, and each game certainly could have gone the other way. South No. 1 Chatfield edged No. 4 Triton 23-22 and North No. 3 Staples-Motley won 46-44 in two overtimes over No. 2 Barnesville.
Chatfield had two 100-yard rushers in its win.
Carson Rowland had 142 yards on 14 carries including a three-yard touchdown with 1:14 remaining that tied the game 22-22. Ross Stoehr kicked the extra point to give the Gophers the lead. A Tobin McMahon interception on the Cobras’ ensuing possession sealed the win.
Ben Carrier had 105 yards on 24 carries for Chatfield (11-0).
Staples-Motley (11-0) was led by Colbe Tappe, who had 107 yards rushing including a 10-yard TD run on the first play of the second overtime. Eli Rutter ran in the conversion.
Jacob Strand scored for Barnesville on its possession, but the Cardinals stopped the conversion attempt.
The higher seed did win all three games in the nine-player division.
The lower seed won both games in Class 1A as South No.3 Springfield topped No. 2 Goodhue 20-14 and North No. 4 Parkers Prairie won big over No. 1 Upsala/Swanville 33-0.
In Class 4A, both No. 1 seeds beating the 4 and the No. 3 seeds winning over the 2 seed.
In the South, No. 3 Marshall shut out No. 2 Byron 21-0.
Jack Meier caught three passes for 127 yards for the Tigers including a 39-yard TD pass from Levi Maeyert. Mason Eickhoff and Gavin Schaefer had rushing touchdowns for Marshall, 10-1.
No games were played in either the Class 3A or Class 5A bracket.
