The Jackson County Central wrestling team competed in a fifth state this season and met a number one ranked team for the fourth time, falling to Brandon Valley 44-19 at Elmen Center at Augustana University in Sioux Falls Friday.
The Lynx are ranked first in Class A, the larger of the two classes of wrestling in South Dakota. They have a dual meet record of 14-0.
The Huskies are rated first in Minnesota Class 1A, the smallest of the state’s three classes. JCC is 11-7.
Jackson County Central won four matches Friday that included a 12-2 major decision by Ulises Bouakham at 126 pounds in his first varsity match.
Isaiah Rodriguez was a winner by an 8-5 decision at 152 pounds.
The other wins for the Huskies came by first-period falls, Dylan Withers in 1:58 at 182 pounds and Caleb Vancura in 13 seconds at 220.
BV’s lineup featured 10 state-ranked wrestlers including five who are ranked first.
Jackson County Central is back in action Saturday at the 15-team Takedown on 22 at Maple River High School.
Augustana dual
After the JCC-BV dual Friday, Augustana hosted the University of Mary in an NSIC dual matching teams that were tied for 14th in the latest NCAA Division II team ratings. The visiting Marauders were 36-0 winners over the Vikings.
Four local products wrestled for Augustana, Jackson County Central graduate Jacob Tvinnereim at 174 pounds and three Martin County West grads, Jaxson Rohman (125), Miles Fitzgerald (157) and Payton Anderson (165).
Rohman had to injury default 2:15 into his match, Fitzgerald lost by fall and Anderson dropped an 8-4 decision.
Another JCC grad, Payton Handevidt, is a freshman at Augustana, while MCW grad Connor Simmonds and Windom graduate Kade Sammons are redshirt frershmen.
A further JCC connection to the Augustana program is recent Jackson County Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee Cooper Moore, who is in his second season as a graduate assistant coach with the Vikings.
Also, each team in the high school dual has a wrestler who has signed to attend Augustana and wrestle for the Vikings, JCC’s Logan Butzon and BV’s Alex Mentzer.
Butzon, ranked third at 145 in Minnesota, lost 6-1 to BV’s Trason Oehme, who is first at 145 in S.D. Mentzer, rated first at 138 in South Dakota, defeated Minnesota 138 No. 4 Thomas Freking 3-0.
