Here's the weekly expanded version of my Sunday Morning Twitter Barrage that features a information on how our local area graduates are faring on the collegiate level.
In track and field, five area grads competed at the Sioux City Relays.
Two of those grads competing for South Dakota State.
Jackson County Central grad Jessica Christoffer is a sophomore with the Jackrabbits. She placed seventh in the 1500 meters (4:38.26). Fairmont graduate Andrew Moeller, a freshman, was 18th in the 800 meters (1:57.11).
Two JCC graduates are competing at Augustana.
Sophomore Molly Boyum placed seventh in the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.58). That's a PR for Molly. Also, freshman Jordan Hassing was 11th in the long jump (20-2 1/2) and competed in 100 meters (12.07).
The final are grad at Sioux City is Fairmont's Connor Tordsen, who is a junior at Dakota State. He placed seventh in the discus (153-1), 12th in shot put (42-2 3/4) and 15th in the hammer throw (156-4).
Also in track and field, Fairmont graduate Wyatt Quiring, a junior at Gustavus, was part of three first-place finishes at the Carleton Relays. He won both the 100 meters (11.45) and 200 meters (22.52) and ran the anchor leg of the Gusties' winning 4×100 team (42.54).
Baseball
Buena Vista team won the first of a four-game series with Wartburg in Waverly, but dropped the next three.
JCC graduate Easton Bahr, a senior with the Beavers, had a hit and scored a run as Buena Vista ended a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 win at Luther in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Fairmont graduate Tyler Tennyson, who is a grad student at BVU, was the winning pitcher, going six innings, allowing one run on six hits, walking two and striking out five. He played first base in the nightcap and had two hits and an RBI in a loss.
JCC graduate Ryan Christopher, a senior at Concordia (St. Paul), had a hit, sacrifice fly, two runs batted in and a stolen base in the first game of a doubleheader vs. Augustana in Sioux Falls Saturday. He reached once in the second game on a hit by pitch.
Fairmont grad Jack Waletich, a redshirt junior at Minnesota State, scored the winning run in the 10th inning for the Mavericks in a 2-1 win over Upper Iowa in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader. He'd been hit by a pitch to reach base. He also had a hit earlier in the game. MSU won the nightcap 8-0.
The Mavericks won two more over the Peacocks on Sunday. In the opener, Waletich had three hits including a home run and two RBI. He had a hit, walked, had and RBI and scored twice in the second game.
Derek Shoen of Truman, a sophomore at the University of Mary, had a hit in each game for the Marauders in a split at Minnesota-Duluth. His second-game hit was a two-run single. He also walked in that game.
Volleyball
JCC graduate Lacey Reitz, a senior with the fifth-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team, had 35 assists for the Red Raiders in a 3-0 win over Trinity Christian, Ill. in an NAIA Volleyball Championship opening round match Saturday.
The Red Raiders advances to the NAIA Championship in Sioux City April 27 - May 1.
Women's soccer
Three Fairmont graduates have started all three games for the Bethany Lutheran women's soccer team.
Sadie Sandersfeld is a senior, Mikayla Stradtman is a junior and Lexi Kaufman is a freshman.
The Vikings (1-2) host Minnesota-Morris Monday.
