Here are a few brief baseball items on this Wednesday evening:
Amateur baseball
There's a light schedule in amateur baseball tonight.
Jackson will play Fox Lake at Truman, Heron Lake and Mountain Lake will play at St. James, Hadley is at Windom and the Milroy Irish hosts Cottonwood in a nonleague matchup.
Lakefield is off until Wednesday when the Frogs host Mountain Lake as part of Summerfest activities.
Martins ineligible
Fairmont, which won the state Class C title last season, has been ruled ineligible for postseason play this season.
The Minnesota Baseball Association's Board of Directors made the decision at a special meeting, saying the team signed a player without gaining a proper release.
The Martins will also serve a two-year probation period and must attend a meeting next spring to be reinstated.
The team announced on its Twitter account that it has chosen to play a select few games and finish its season at a tournament in Jordan in early July.
Schedule change
With Springfield playing in the state high school tournament, there's a change in Thursday's schedule for the Jackson American Legion baseball team.
Post 130 will now play at Fairmont on Thursday, with Junior Legion at 6 p.m., followed by the Legion contest.
Busy stretch
Thursday starts a stretch of five straight days of games for the Jackson Legion team.
Post 130 goes to Sioux Falls for the Dakota Classic this weekend.
There are 40 teams in the tournament from South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Missouri.
In pool play, Jackson starts with two games Friday, meeting Sioux Falls West at noon and Norfolk, Neb. at 2:30 p.m. The squad then plays Wayzata at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Pierre at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
Post 130 is then scheduled to host Heron Lake-Okabena Monday at Wacker Field.
Luke Becker
Fairmont graduate Luke Becker is hitting .309 for the Schaumburg Boomers of the independent Frontier League. He's 17-for-55 with one double, one triple and two home runs. He's also walked 14 times in 17 games.
Derek Shoen
Derek Shoen of Truman is playing with the Bismarck Larks and leads the Northwoods League in runs batted in with 16 through 13 games. He's also pitched in two games.
Jack Hested
Fairmont grad Jack Hested is in Florida playing in the four-team Jacksonville Coastal Collegiate Baseball League.
He's playing for the Beaches Turtles and has pitched 16 innings in four games, starting two and pitching one complete game.
