National leader
I’ve neglected to follow up on this next item until now.
Jackson County Central graduate Gavin Jacobsen, a sophomore with the Bethany Lutheran College baseball team this spring, was the national leader in strikeouts per nine innings in NCAA Division III baseball.
Jacobsen struck out 85 batters in 51 innings, which projects to 15.0 per nine innings.
Second was Shaun Garmelin of Rhode Island College, who averaged 14.46 per nine.
Becker update
Fairmont graduate Luke Becker is hitting .225 for the Spire City Ghost Hounds of the Atlantic League. The team had been known as the Frederick Baseball Club until announcing its name change Saturday.
Becker has 38 hits in 169 at bats for the Ghost Hounds, who have a record of 20-31. He has seven doubles, one triple, three home runs, five stolen bases and 13 runs batted in.
Spire City closes out a series vs. the York Revolution today. The Ghost Hounds then have road series vs. the Charleston Dirty Birds and Lexington Counter Clocks.
