Shoen to play with MoonDogs
Derek Shoen will be on the roster of the Mankato MoonDogs when they open their Northwoods League season Monday.
The Truman native set a number of hitting records at the University of Mary this season, but is on the Mankato roster as a pitcher. The team’s release announcing he has joined the team said Shoen could be the MoonDogs’ version of Shohei Ohtani.
Shoen broke longstanding team records this season for U-Mary in home runs (14) and runs batted in (51). In 51 games he hit .339 (60-of-177) with a .473 on base percentage, a .644 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.117 to lead the Marauders in each category.
On the mound, he had a 0-2 record with an earned run average of 5.84. He appeared in eight games, starting one.
In 12 and one-third innings he allowed 11 runs (eight earned) on eight hits, walked six, hit six batters and struck out nine.
Shoen was also named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District Baseball Team.
The MoonDogs play four home games at ISG Field to start the season, hosting the Duluth Huskies Monday and Tuesday and the Waterloo Bucks Wednesday and Thursday. Each of those games start at 6:35 p.m.
