Bulls in the coaching ranks
The longest tenured member of the Jackson Bulls and a former Bull met up as head high school baseball coaches for the first time Saturday.
Current Bull Andy Wolf is the coach of Okoboji and former Bull Jared Rahe is the head man at Harris-Lake Park, which hosted the Dickinson County Classic in Lake Park. Wolf has played with Jackson since 2000, while Rahe was with the team from 2005-2008.
Wolf’s Pioneers were 8-7 winners over Rahe’s Wolves in the final game of the three-team, round-robin event. Spirit Lake was the other team involved and went 2-0 on the day.
Okoboji has a 4-1 record, while HLP is 3-4.
One former and two current Bulls make up the coaching staff at Jackson County Central, which had its season come to an end Saturday in the Section 3AA tournament.
Former Bull Mike Wierson is the head coach of the Huskies, while Blaise Jacobsen is the assistant varsity coach and Kevin Holm coaches the B squad.
Another former Bull is a head high school coach in Iowa as Briar Rowley is the mentor at Emmetsburg. The E-Hawks are 0-4.
And, yet another former Bull, Pat (Ballpark) Frank, is having another successful season as the head coach at United South Central.
The Rebels won the Gopher Conference championship and have won their first two games in the Section 1A tournament to put their record at 15-4.
USC, which plays its home games at Pat Frank Field at Thompson Park in Wells, is seeded fourth in the 14-team tournament. The Rebels play top-seeded Lyle-Pacelli at 5 p.m. Monday at the Riverland baseball complex in Austin.
Jacobsen still leads nation
JCC grad and current Jackson Bull Gavin Jacobsen completed his sophomore season at Bethany Lutheran College as the Vikings lost a pair of games at an NCAA regional tournament in LaCrosse.
Jacobsen appeared in 11 games for BLC, starting 10. In 51 innings, he allowed 25 runs (24 earned) on 51 hits, walked 24, hit eight and struck out 85.
He struck out 15.0 batters per nine innings, which leads all NCAA Division III pitchers in the country.
Jacobsen was a first-team all-Upper Midwest Athletic Conference selection.
By the way, Wisconsin-LaCrosse won that regional tournament it hosted and also won the best-of-three super regional it hosted this weekend.
LaCrosse won the first game 10-7, UW-Stevens Point won Game Two 24-20 and LaCrosse won the deciding game 16-10.
In Game Two, Stevens Point was winning 19-2 before allowing 18 unanswered runs before winning the game with five in the top of the ninth.
