PORT ALBERNI, B.C. – During the day Friday, Alberni Valley’s Hobie Hedquist was named a finalist for the Top Goaltender Award in the British Columbia Hockey League and then at night was the winning net minder in the Bulldogs’ first playoff game.
Hedquist, a Heron Lake native and University of North Dakota commit, compiled a record of 28-9 in his first season in the BCHL.
He was first in the league in minutes played (2470), tied for first in wins (28), second in shutouts (5), sixth in goals against average (2.53) and 10th in save percentage (.909).
The five shutouts tied an Alberni Valley franchise record.
Friday night, Hedquist was between the pipes as the Bulldogs were 5-3 winners over the Cowichan Valley Capitals in Game 1 of their best-of-seven Coastal Conference Quarterfinal series.
He made 21 saves in the contest. Game 2 in the series is Saturday night.
Games 3 and 4 are in Duncan, B.C. Tuesday and Wednesday.
