With the calendar turning to May earlier this week, track and field teams in Minnesota now head into the “big meet” portion of their schedules.
First on that list is the 68th edition of the Fairmont Sentinel Relays Friday at Bob Bonk Track/Mahoney Field in Fairmont. Field events start at 4 p.m., the girls 4x800 relay is the first event on the track at 4:30 and the boys 4x400 is the final event, scheduled for 8:35.
And since it is the Sentinel Relays, there’s a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. Of course, that also means that there’s a 50 percent chance there won’t be showers or thunderstorms.
Jackson County Central and Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin will both compete in Fairmont Friday. Both teams also competed on Tuesday.
The Huskies were first in the boys team standings and second in the girls at Lakeview.
Three JCC boys had two individual first-place finishes in that meet.
Quinn Landherr won both the 400 meters and pole vault, Evan Paplow won both the 800 and 1600 meters and Caleb Vancura won both shot put and discus.
Landherr also anchored the Huskies’ winning 4x400 relay team. Running the first three legs were Braeden Tufvesson, Brigan McCarthy and Wyatt Wenzel.
Jackson County Central’s girls had two firsts at Cottonwood, with Rylie Cother winning the 100 hurdles and Peyton Hanson the pole vault.
MCW/B-O was fourth in the team standings for both boys and girls at St. James Tuesday.
Max Olson had the lone first for the Mavericks, winning the boys shot put.
The Huskies and Mavericks are then both at the Section 2A true team meet Tuesday at Wells.
