With the calendar changing to May, it’s time for the “big meet” portion of the season to start for track and field teams.
Entries in those meets are typically more limited, making the competition stiffer as coaches get their athletes entered in their best events and there’s less movement in their lineups.
First on the “big meet” list every year (at least when it doesn’t get weathered out) is the Sentinel Relays in Fairmont. The 68th edition of the event is scheduled for Friday. The meet starts at 4 p.m., with the final event scheduled to start at 8:35.
Ahead on the schedule are section and state true team meets, the Trojan Relays in Worthington and conference meets leading up to MSHSL sub-section and section meets and ultimately the state meet in June for the best of the best.
There will be 16 teams in Friday’s meet in Fairmont, divided into two eight-team classes, based on enrollment. Jackson County Central will compete in larger school Class AA, with Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin in Class A.
At last year’s meet, JCC’s Rylie Cother won two events, the 100-meter hurdles and long jump. She was also third in the high jump.
Ben Dahlin placed high in two events for the Huskies in the 2024 boys meet, placing second in the 200 meters and third in the 100 meters. Braeden Tufvesson was second in the pole vault.
For MCWBO in the Class A boys event last year, Bear Kosbab won the 200 meters and was second in the 100 meters. On the girls side, Evelynn Christenson was seventh in the 1600 meters.
Fairmont won both Class AA team titles last year. In Class A, Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda won the boys team title and St. Clair/Immanuel Lutheran was first in the girls meet.
