Minnesota Valley Lutheran batted around in the first inning and went on to beat Martin County West 10-0 in five innings in the first round of the Section 2A baseball tournament Thursday at Mueller Park in New Ulm.
The fifth-seeded Chargers even their record at 9-9 and advance to play at Madelia to start the double elimination portion of the tournament Tuesday. The fourth-seeded Blackhawks beat 13th-seeded Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey by the same 10-0 score in the opening round.
The Mavericks finish their season with a 3-12 record.
Lucas Larson had MCW’s lone hit, a single to lead off the fourth inning. He also walked.
Larson was also tagged with the pitching loss, going 2.2 innings. Noah Meixell went the final 1.2 innings.
Joshua VanderPlas was the winning pitcher for MVL, allowing the one hit and walk and striking out 10.
