JCC boys to play in two showcases

Jackson County Central’s boys basketball team has become a hot commodity. Coach Alex Hein’s team will play in two premier events presented by Breakdown Sports USA.

The Huskies will play in both the Tip Off Classic on Saturday, Dec. 13 and the Southern Minny Hoops Fest on Saturday, Jan. 3.

Tip Off Classic

JCC will play Minnehaha Academy as part of the Breakdown Sports Tip-Off Classic on Saturday, Dec. 13. The Huskies and Redhawks are scheduled for a 3:15 p.m. tip time in the Auxiliary Gym at Edina High School.

There are 18 games scheduled on three courts that day. Games will also be played at Edina High School’s Main Gym and the Edina Community Center.

Minnehaha Academy is located in Minneapolis.

According to the school’s website, tuition for its youngest students (preschool, age 3) is $9,605. That is for three partial days (Monday/Wednesday/Friday until 1 p.m.)

For high school students, tuition is $30,065 for grades 9-11 and $30,185 for grade 12. For students riding a bus to school, the cost is $1,400 per rider in Minneapolis (round trip) and $1,500 for Saint Paul/Suburban riders.

Minnehaha Academy has qualified for the state tournament eight straight years and 11 of the last 15. The Redhawks won four straight Class 2A titles from 2013-2019, the 2020 tournament was canceled, and Minnehaha won the Class 3A state title in 2021.

Jackson County Central has been to the state tournament four times in nine years, placing second in its first trip in 2016.

Hoops Fest

JCC will face Zumbrota-Mazeppa from Section 1AA as part of the Southern Minny Hoops Fest on Saturday, Jan. 3.

The Huskies and Cougars will play at 3:15 p.m. that day at Byron High School.

There are 27 boys and girls games played at four sites that day. Games will also be hosted by Kasson-Mantorville, Goodhue and Rochester Mayo.

Zumbrota-Mazeppa had an 18-11 record last season. The Cougars lost to Caledonia in the semifinals of the Section 1AA tournament.

The lone state tournament appearance for Z-M was in 2003.
