Bulls bow out
Jackson falls to St. Joseph at state amateur tourney
St. Joseph pitcher Joey Atkinson held Jackson to one hit as the Joes and scored one of his team’s two runs in a 2-0 win over the Bulls in the first round of the state Class C amateur baseball tournament Sunday at the Mini Met in Jordan.
Jackson, which was making its 14th appearance in a state tournament, ends its season with a 16-7 record.
The lone hit for the Bulls was a two-out single by Chris Gumto in the second inning.
Atkinson, who played college baseball at Concordia University in St. Paul with Jackson County Central graduate Ryan Christopher, walked two and struck out nine. Atkinson retired 18 in a row in a stretch from the third through ninth inning.
He also scored the first run of the game for the Joes as he doubled with one out in the bottom of the second and scored on a home run down the right field line by Tanner Staller.
Evan Olesen pitched the first two innings and took the loss for the Bulls. Tucker Sorenson, a draftee from Hadley, went the final six innings, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out five.
St. Joseph (16-10) advances to play Buffalo at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Belle Plaine.
