New Ulm Cathedral is the new record holder for most state softball championships as the Greyhounds defeated Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley 10-4 in the Class A championship game Friday at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
It’s their eighth state title. They had been tied with St. Bernard’s with seven state championships.
Cathedral’s first state title was in 1993 in Fridley. The Greyhounds defeated Jackson High School 8-0 in the semifinals that year.
That was the first of three state titles for Cathedral, led by pitcher Steph Klavitter. The Greyhounds compiled a record of 85-3 in those three seasons with Klavitter going 74-3.
In that 1993 season she was 23-1 with an earned run average of 0.38.
Klavitter went on to play at Minnesota and later played three seasons in the Women’s Professional Softball League.
It was Cathedral’s 19th trip to the state tourney. Hermantown holds the record for the most state tournament appearances with seven.
In Class AA, Randolph won its second state title with a 3-0 win over Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial.
Section 3AA champion Dassel-Cokato won the consolation bracket title. After a 7-1 loss to LCWM in the opening round, the Chargers beat Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and Glencoe-Silver Lake, each by a 1-0 score.
It was D-C’s third win of the season over GSL.
Mankato East beat Cretin-Derham Hall 6-1 to win the Class AAA title, the sixth championship in school history. The Cougars scored all of their runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Raiders scored their lone run in the fourth.
