Jackson County Central senior Quinn Landherr closed out his high school pole vault career Tuesday by tying for fourth place at the state Class 1A meet at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
Landherr broke his own school record as he cleared 13 feet, 6 inches. The winner was Turner Beachy of Staples-Motley, who went 15-0.
Also for the JCC boys, two athletes qualified for Wednesday’s finals out of their prelims.
Senior Clay Malchow advanced to the finals of the 110-meter hurdles. His time of 15.25 seconds was the fourth fastest in Tuesday’s prelims. The fastest time was by Logan Swanson of Concordia Academy (14.62).
Malchow fell in the 300-meter prelims. He finished the event and was 17th out of 18 runners in 44.55 seconds.
Ben Dahlin, also a senior, is in the finals in the 200 meters. His time of 22.17 Tuesday was fourth. The fastest time was 22.06 by Gavin Atherton of Waterville-Elysian-Morristown.
Dahlin also made the 200-meter finals at the state meet last year, placing eighth.
For the JCC girls, senior Rylie Cother competed in two field event finals on Tuesday.
She was 11th out of 23 entries in the long jump (17- .5). The winner was McKayla Lewis of Math & Science Academy (18-5.5).
Cother was also 29th out of 35 competitors in the high jump as she cleared 5-0. Annika Aakre of Park Christian was first (5-7).
Malchow’s 110-meter high hurdle finals are scheduled for 4:38 p.m. Wednesday, with Dahlin’s 200-meter race set for 7:05 p.m.
JCC will also have two relay teams compete.
The girls 4x200 team of Natalia Botello-Ramos, Zoey Hall, Stevie Untiedt and Allison Luebben runs at 5:09 p.m. and the boys 4x200 unit of Malchow, Isaac Hesebeck, Landherr and Dahlin is next at 5:17 p.m.
Also, Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin had one athlete competing.
Senior Bear Kosbab was not able to make the finals in the 100 meters. His time of 11.56 seconds was 15th out of an original field of 20 runners,
