
Martin County West swept a Valley Conference softball doubleheader from Madelia Friday in Searles. Both games were shortened by the 10-run rule with the Mavericks winning 12-0 in five innings and 13-3 in six innings.
Maddie Carlson threw a shutout in the first game as she faced just one batter over the minimum, allowing one hit, no walks, hitting one batter and striking out 11.
Kellie Kobersoski had the lone hit for the Blackhawks, a single with one out in the fifth. Addy Hohlhuter then caught a line drive from the next batter and doubled the runner off first to end the game.
Hannah Rosenberg had four hits including a triple for MCW. Courtney Anderson had three hits including a home run and Bailey Larson had three hits and two runs batted in.
Carlson had an inside-the-park home run and three RBI, Emily Schettler had one hit and three RBI and Rowan Faber had a hit.
In the second game, Madelia scored one run in the top of the first and two in the second for a 3-0 lead. Martin County West plated one in the second, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and then closed the game out with seven runs in the sixth.
Wohlhuter had three hits including a triple, while Emily Anderson and Courtney Anderson also had three hits apiece.
Carlson had two hits with a triple and Faber also had two hits. Rosenberg and Schettler both doubled and Lillie Schultz had a hit for the Mavericks.
Sydney Clow was the winning pitcher for MCW, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits, walking three and striking out five.
The Mavericks and Nicollet are tied for the Valley Conference lead with 4-1 records. Cleveland also has one loss and is 2-1.
Martin County West defeated Nicollet in its season opener and the teams will play again Thursday in Nicollet. The Mavericks split their season series with Cleveland. Nicollet hosts Cleveland in a doubleheader Tuesday.
