Several former area wrestlers were in the lineup for Augustana Thursday as the NCAA Division II fifth-ranked Vikings lost 37-4 to Division I No. 10 Minnesota at Williams Arena.
Martin County West graduate Jaxson Rohman recorded the lone win of the match for the Vikings as he won a 16-7 major decision win at over Quincy Hulverson at 125 pounds.
Rohman, ranked eighth in Divisionn II, had three first-period takedowns for an early 6-3 lead. He added four more takedowns and earned an escape point in the remainder of the match.
Another MCW grad, 10th-ranked Miles Fitzgerald, lost an 8-1 decision to Minnesota’s Sebas Swiggum at 157.
Former Windom/Mountain Lake Cobra Kade Sammons lost by technical fall to the Gophers’ Vance VomBaur at 141.
Also, Jackson County Central grad Jacob Tvinnereim lost 3-2 to unbeaten Jared Krattiger (5-0) of Minnesota at 174.
Augustana is 0-2 in duals with its other loss being to another DI team, South Dakota State.
The Vikings are at the Chadron State Duals Sunday, facing San Francisco State and Western Colorado.
Rahn wins
Another former Martin County Red Bull, Fairmont graduate Jacob Rahn, was a winner Thursday.
Rahn, a sophomore at Iowa Lakes Community College, won by fall over Jacob Leohr at heavyweight as the Lakers defeated NIACC 36-18.
Volleyball
JCC graduate Alaina Wolff and the University of South Dakota volleyball team opens play in the Creighton Regional of the NCAA volleyball tournament at 3:30 p.m. Friday vs. fifth-seeded Houston.
Wolff is a 5-foot-6 junior defensive specialist for the Coyotes, who earned their spot in the NCAA by winning the Summit League tournament title last weekend, also in Omaha.
The other opening-round match has Creighton facing Auburn at 6:30 p.m. The winners meet at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
At the NAIA volleyball tourney in Sioux City, Marian University (Ind.) beat Northwestern 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21) Wednesday. The Red Raiders play again at 4 p.m. Friday vs. Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Tex.).
JCC grad Lacey (Wacker) Reitz is an assistant coach at Northwestern.
Also at the NAIA tournament, Dakota Wesleyan, coached by Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield graduate Lindsay Wilber, defeated Southern Oregon 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-21) in pool play Wednesday.
The Tigers conclude pool play vs. Mid America Nazarene (Kan.) at 7 p.m. Friday.
Men’s basketball
Coach Pat Garvin's Bethany Lutheran College men's basketball team is 6-0 after a 99-96 win over Simpson at home Wednesday.
The Vikings are fourth as a team in scoring in NCAA Division III with 94.3 points per game and second in assists with 22.8.
Bethany is at Wartburg Saturday.
