Martin County West graduate Brandon Williamson was the winning pitcher in the final start of his rookie season in the major leagues as the Cincinnati Reds won 19-2 over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Friday.
The win kept Cincinnati’s postseason hopes alive for another day, but the Reds would be eliminated on Saturday night when the Reds lost to the Cardinals 15-6.
In six innings Williamson allowed two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out two.
“It’s really comforting going out on the mound with a lead,” Williamson told Mark Sheldon of mlb.com. “Little things don’t seem like a big deal.”
The offense produced a season-high in runs as the Reds' 17-run win was the second largest against the Cardinals in club history. The largest was a 19-1 win on Aug. 12, 1882, the ninth time the teams faced each other.
The teams have now met 2,338 times with St. Louis leading the series 1,224-1,114.
The left-hander finishes the season with a 5-5 record and 4.46 earned run average. In 117 innings he allowed 63 runs (58 earned) on 111 hits, walked 39, hit two and struck out 98. Opponents have a .248 batting average. Cincinnati was 14-8 in games Williamson started.
