WELCOME – Seventh-seeded Martin County West opened the Section 2A baseball tournament Thursday with a 12-4 win over 10th-seeded Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey at the Fox Lake Area Sports Complex.
The win gives the Mavericks an 11-7 record and a spot in the double elimination portion of the tournament. MCW plays at second-seeded Madelia (16-4) at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Blackhawks were 8-0 winners over No. 15 seed Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Thursday.
Madelia won both regular-season matchups between the Valley Conference rivals, 14-0 in Welcome on April 11 and 6-1 in Madelia on May 18.
Zach Anderson went the distance to get the pitching win for MCW. He allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits, walked only one and struck out 11.
Anderson was also one of three Mavericks with two hits at the plate. Christian Bachenberg had a pair of doubles and Brice Enter also had two hits.
Wyatt Williamson had a three-run double for Martin County West.
