ST. PETER – Jackson County Central made a three-run first inning stand up as the Huskies defeated Class 1A top-ranked Hayfield 4-2 in a nonconference baseball game Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus College.
Damien Phaly and Payton Handevidt walked to open the game for JCC and eventually both scored. Trace Michelson tripled with two outs to score Cameron Scholten.
The Vikings got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the third, but the Huskies got that run back in the top of the fifth when Levi Lindley was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Bryson Powers.
Hayfield plated a run in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate before a ground out ended the game.
Michelson recorded two strikeouts in two scoreless innings before Andrew Boyum allowed an unearned run in one inning. Brett Rossow went three and one-third innings, allowing just one hit and one run. Butzon got the save as he recorded the final two outs of the game.
Powers and Butzon each had two hits for the Huskies, now 1-2.
