Less than 72 hours after getting doused with mayonnaise while sitting next to Flavor Flav, University of Minnesota football coach P.J. Fleck and his entire offensive staff made an in-home visit to Jackson County Central junior Roman Voss on Monday.
On Friday, the Gophers were 24-10 winners over Virginia Tech at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, N.C. It’s Minnesota’s eighth straight bowl win, the longest current streak in the country and the longest in Big Ten conference history.
On Monday, Fleck and five of his offensive staff members were paying Voss and his family a visit.
Minnesota was the first school to make Voss an official offer last May.
Since then, he has received Power Four offers from Wisconsin, Iowa, Iowa State, Illinois, Kansas State, Kansas and California.
Minnesota has signed the No. 1 high school player in the state the past two years and reportedly has committed to continue that trend.
Voss, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound athlete, is listed as the No. 2 player in the state for the Class of 2026 by prepredzone.com.
The two players around him on the list, No. 1 Andrew Trout, an offensive lineman from Rocori; and No. 3 Howie Johnson, a defensive lineman from Forest Lake, have committed to the ‘U’.
Voss has said in the past he’d like to make a commitment before his senior season.
Roman became the Huskies’ starting quarterback as an eighth grader and has guided JCC to three straight state tournament berths. He’s also played receiver on offense with the Huskies, safety on defense and has also handled punting and kickoff duties at times.
Reports from numerous scouting services lean toward Voss playing tight end in college and with five offensive coaches visiting Monday, that appears to make Minnesota’s intention clear. However, things can change once players are on campus.
