Tyrone in attendance
Tyrone Wacker attended Friday’s game and worked the crowd of JCC fans that chose to watch the game standing on the track near the Huskies’ sideline.
Before the game he was on the field and talked with coaches and a handful of players.
Some of the JCC players seemed to have little idea who he was other than coach Wade Wacker’s dad and coach Shad Wacker’s grandpa.
Well, Tyrone was a head coach in four varsity high school sports (football, basketball, baseball, track and field), won state championships in two of them (football at Gaylord in 1972 and Jackson in 1985, as well baseball at JCC in 2004). He is in the coaches hall of fame in two sports (football, baseball).
Tyrone also was a graduate assistant football coach at South Dakota State, head football and baseball coach at Worthington Community College (now Minnesota West) and also head football and baseball coach at Huron College.
He’s also a member of the Minnesota Baseball Association Hall of Fame and Mayville State (N.D.) Athletics Hall of Fame.
The only time Tyrone was not a head coach in high school football coaching career was under Tom Schuller at JCC. He stepped away as Jackson’s coach following the 1992 season and didn’t coach for five years before joining Schuller’s staff in 1998. The Huskies won a state title in 2001.
That was a full circle time for Schuller, who was an assistant under Tyrone at the start of his coaching career. Schuller has long considered Tyrone a great friend and mentor.
Tyrone had a 113-45 record (.715) as a head high school football coach. He was 56-4 (.933) at Gaylord and 57-41 (.582) at Jackson.
