
Jackson County Central graduate Thomas Freking placed fifth at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Championships at Brookshire Grocery Arena in Bossier City, La. last weekend.
Freking, a member of the Iowa State club wrestling team, won six matches and lost two.
He started the tournament with three wins.
Freking won by fall in :22 over Jelcey Marte of Liberty, won a 17-2 tech fall over Ryan Auel of Penn State and a 6-5 decision over Camron Crump of Life.
In the quarterfinals, Freking dropped a 5-3 decision to Washington State’s Josiah Johnson to fall into the consolation bracket.
He won his first two matches in the consolation bracket, earning a 12-5 decision over Kennedy Lowry of Sloan and winning 6-4 over Andrew Brevot of RPI.
In the consolation semifinals, Freking lost by fall in 6:27 to David Norris of Apprentice. That put him in the fifth-place match, where he won 13-8 over Zachary Casias of Tarleton State.
Also, it was also announced that Freking has been named to the NCWA all-Academic team.
Iowa State finished 12th in the team standings. Menlo won the team title.
