For the second straight week to start the season, the Minnesota Vikings will be on the road Sunday as they take on the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium in Glendale.
Kickoff is at 3:05 p.m. Fox will televise the game, with Gus Johnson on play-by-play, Aqib Talib as analyst and Megan Olivi on the sideline.
It's the 29th meeting between the franchises, the eighth in Arizona. The Vikings lead the series 17-11.
The Cardinals, then in St. Louis, won the first two meetings, in 1963 and 1967.
Minnesota's first win in the series came on Oct. 19, 1969 in St. Louis, a 27-10 Vikings win that gave them a 4-1 record on the way to going 12-2 and playing in Super Bowl IV vs. Kansas City.
Vikings quarterback Joe Kapp was 14-for-31 passing for 243 yards and three touchdowns.
John Henderson caught TD passes of 7 and 39 yards and Kapp also connected with John Beasley on a 12-yard TD. Fred Cox kicked field goals of 21 and 15 yards.
The teams have met twice in the postseason, both in Minnesota.
The first was on Dec. 21, 1974 when the Vikings won 30-14 at Metropolitan Stadium in the NFC Division Playoffs.
Fran Tarkenton threw two TD passes to John Gilliam, covering 16 and 38 yards. Nate Wright returned a fumble 20 yards for a touchdown.
Chuck Foreman rushed for 114 yards including a 4-yard touchdown. Cox kicked a 37-yard field goal.
The teams also met in the NFC Divisional playoffs on Jan. 10, 1999 at the Metrodome with the Vikings winning 41-21. Randall Cunningham threw 3 TD passes, to Andrew Glover, Leroy Hoard and Randy Moss. Hoard also ran for 2 TDs.
There would be heartbreak for the Vikings, losing to Atlanta in the NFC Championship game.
Last win in Arizona
Minnesota's last win in Arizona was on Dec. 14, 2008, a 35-14 win.
Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson would earn NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors as he threw four touchdown passes.
Also, Adrian Peterson ran for 165 yards.
Notable
The Vikings play in Arizona for the first time since 2015 and the fourth time under Mike Zimmer, who has a 2-1 record against the Cardinals.
The home team has won the last seven games in the series.
In a scheduling quirk in 1991, the teams played twice. Minnesota won both games by a combined 62-7.
The Cardinals franchise started in Chicago and played there from 1920-1959. They spent 1960-1987 in St. Louis and moved to Arizona in 1988.
On Aug. 6, 1983, the Vikings and Cardinals opened the preseason with the first-ever NFL game in London, with the Vikings winning 28-10 at Wembley Stadium.
Xavier Rhodes recorded the longest interception return in Vikings history, going 100 yards for a TD vs. Arizona on Nov. 20, 2016. Also in that game, Cordarrelle Patterson returned a Cardinals kickoff 104 yards for a TD.
After starting the season with two straight road games, the Vikings then play three straight at U.S. Bank Stadium. They'll host Seattle (Sept. 26), Cleveland (Oct. 3) and Detroit (Oct. 10).
