The Minnesota Vikings make their lone appearance of the season on Monday Night Football when they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles.
It will be Minnesota's first appearance on Monday Night Football in September since beating New Orleans 29-19 to open the 2017 season. The Vikings played on MNF in 2017 and their last five Monday games have all been in Dece, ber.
This will be the third time the Vikings have played the Eagles on a Monday. Philadelphia was home for both of the previous contests and claimed wins (32-24 in 1990 and 27-16 in 2004).
The Vikings also played the Eagles on a Tuesday night in December 2010 after the game was postponed for two days because of a blizzard.
Minnesota won that game 24-14 in Joe Webb’s first start at quarterback for the Vikings filling in for an injured Brett Favre.
Webb, a sixth-round pick in the 2010 Draft, threw for 195 yards and ran nine yards for a touchdown.
Adrian Peterson scored from one yard out and Antoine Winfield returned a fumble 45 yards for a score.
The Tuesday game followed back-to-back Monday games for the Vikings.
A game vs. the New York Giants was moved to a Monday night in Detroit after the Metrodome's inflated roof collapsed in a snowstorm. The Vikings lost that game 21-3.
Minnesota then lost a regularly scheduled Monday game in Chicago to the Bears 40-14 the next week.
Simultaneous games
For the first time since taking over Monday Night Football in 2006, ESPN has two games scheduled at the same time.
The Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills will start at 6:15 p.m. on ESPN.
Minnesota and Philadelphia are scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. on ABC, with new Monday Night Football announcers Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, who joined ESPN in the offseason after spending 20 years at Fox. Lisa Salters will be on the sidelines.
ESPN and ABC are both owned by Disney and ABC has aired ESPN-branded sports programming for years.
This is the only scheduled doubleheader this season, but starting in 2023 there will be three per season as part of a new deal with the NFL.
As a result, ESPN will be experimenting Monday night with an approach that might seem at times more like NFL RedZone.
During portions of both broadcasts, ESPN will activate a double-box view that will allow live look-ins of each game, with SportsCenter host Scott Van Pelt offering highlights and updates for both. There will also be a second scorebug of Vikings-Eagles on ESPN and Titans-Bills on ABC to keep fans in the loop.
During halftime of both games, host Suzy Kolber and analyst Booger McFarland will go over highlights and offer live game action look-ins. Once Titans-Bills ends, ESPN will cut to SportsCenter hosted by Van Pelt, who will offer extended looks at the last quarter of Vikings-Eagles.
As a result, Peyton and Eli Manning won’t be hosting their popular “Manningcast” alternate feed Monday night on ESPN2. Instead, the network will simulcast ESPN all night, airing Titans-Bills and sticking with Van Pelt for postgame coverage.
Notable
WR Justin Jefferson set a career high and led all NFL players with 184 receiving yards in Minnesota’s season-opening win over Green Bay. He also had the highest yards per catch (20.4) of any player with at least five receptions in the opening week.
Kevin O’Connell became the fifth Vikings head coach to win his head coaching debut. He joins Norm Van Brocklin (1961), Dennis Green (1997), Brad Childress (2006) and Mike Zimmer (2014).
QB Kirk Cousins has thrown for more than 300 yards against the Eagles five times in his career, including 427 yards, the third-highest of his career at Philadelphia on Sept. 21, 2014.
OLB Danielle Hunter has recorded a sack in the Vikings last two games vs. Philadelphia. His last occurred in Minnesota’s 38-20 win over the Eagles on Oct. 30, 2019.
WR Adam Thielen had the second-longest reception of his career, 68 yards, vs. the Eagles in 2018.
Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts is the only QB in history with 4,000-plus passing yards (4,306) and 1,000-plus rushing yards (1,146) in their first 20 career starts.
The first time
The first game between the Vikings and Eagles was on Oct. 28, 1962.
Here are some highlights from that day.
No. 1 TV show
The Beverly Hillbillies on CBS was the top TV show in the country. It featured the Clampetts, a poor, backwoods family from the hills of the Ozarks, who move to posh Beverly Hills, California, after striking oil on their land. The show was followed by two other "country cousin" series on CBS: Petticoat Junction and its spin-off Green Acres, which reversed the rags-to-riches, country-to-city model of The Beverly Hillbillies.
Ed Sullivan
The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety show that ran on Sunday nights on CBS from 1948-1971, and was hosted by New York entertainment columnist Ed Sullivan.
Guests that night were Louis Prima, Jackie Mason, and Steve Allen.
No. 1 song
The top song was He's a Rebel by The Crystals.
No. 1 movie
Number one at the box office was The Longest Day, shot in black and white and based on Cornelius Ryan's 1959 non-fiction book of the same name about D-Day landings at Normandy on June 6, 1944.
The film was produced by Darryl F. Zanuck, who paid author Ryan $175,000 for the film rights.
There was a large international ensemble cast including John Wayne, Kenneth More, Richard Todd, Robert Mitchum, Richard Burton, Steve Forrest, Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Red Buttons, Peter Lawford, Eddie Albert, Jeffrey Hunter, Stuart Whitman, Tom Tryon, Rod Steiger, Leo Genn, Gert Fröbe, Irina Demick, Bourvil, Curd Jürgens, George Segal, Robert Wagner, Paul Anka, and Arletty.
