For the 122nd time, the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers will meet Sunday with kickoff at noon at U.S. Bank Stadium. The game will be televised on Fox, with Kevin Burkhardt on play-by-play, Greg Olsen as analyst and Pam Oliver on the sideline.
The Vikings play each their division rivals twice during the regular season.
The Vikings have played the Bears and the Lions 120 times apiece.
Minnesota leads the series vs. 61-57-2, although Chicago did win the only postseason meeting in 1995. The teams have not met yet this season.
The Vikings lead the series with Detroit 79-39-2 after winning earlier this season. They’ll play once more this season.
Minnesota and Green Bay have met twice in postseason play, so the Vikings have played the Packers more than any other team. Green Bay leads the series 63-55-3. The teams have split their playoff meetings.
Twice they’ve met in consecutive weeks.
The latest was in the 2012 season when the Vikings won 37-34 in the regular-season finale at the Metrodome on Sunday, Dec. 30 and then the Packers won 24-10 in an NFC Wild Card game on Saturday, Jan. 5.
The first time was in the Vikings inaugural season in 1961 when they met in weeks 6 and 7 of the regular season.
Green Bay won both of those games, 33-7 at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington on Oct. 22 and 28-10 on Oct. 29 at County Stadium in Milwaukee.
In the game at The Met, Paul Hornung kicked four field goals for the Packers, from 14, 18, 13 and 16 yards out. The goal posts were on the goal line in those days.
Boyd Dowler caught a 78-yard TD pass from Bart Starr, Jim Taylor scored on a three-yard run and Dan Currie returned one of Fran Tarkenton’s three interceptions 21 yards for a score. George Shaw replaced Tarkenton and threw an interception.
Tarkenton went in from one yard out for Minnesota’s TD.
In the rematch in Milwaukee the following Sunday, Hornung ran in from one yard out and also threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ron Kramer. Starr also threw two TD passes, eight yards to Jim Taylor and 23 yards to Max McGee.
For the Vikings, Mike Mercer kicked a 13-yard field goal and Jerry Reichow caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Shaw.
The Packers played two or three home games per year in Milwaukee from 1953-1994. They played at Wisconsin State Fair Park in nearby West Allis and also Marquette Stadium before moving to County Stadium.
They would traditionally host at least one divisional rival from the NFC Central in Milwaukee each season. The Vikings and Lions were the most frequent opponents in those Milwaukee games, playing each 14 times.
However, only once did the Packers play their archrivals, the Chicago Bears, in Milwaukee, beating the Bears 20-3 in 1974.
Green Bay compiled a 76-47-3 (.617) mark in 126 regular-season County Stadium contests in 42 seasons.
Vince Lombardi
One of the legendary coaches in NFL history is Vince Lombardi, who coached Green Bay from 1959-1967.
Lombardi’s Packers compiled a record of 98-30-4 and won five titles including Super Bowl I and Super Bowl II.
In the early days of NFL Films he was miced up and provided this sound clip:
Stat of the Week
Linebacker Eric Kendricks had a sack in last week’s game vs. the Chargers, his fourth of the season.
He’s one of three players to have at least 4.0 sacks and two interceptions through their team’s first nine games of the season.
The other two are also linebackers.
Jamie Collins had 6.0 sacks and three interceptions for New England in 2019 and Terrell Suggs had 6.0 sacks and two interceptions for Baltimore in 2011.
Notable
Tight end Tyler Conklin recorded the first multi-touchdown game of his career and doubled his career receiving touchdown total from two to four last week vs. Los Angeles. He’s the first Minnesota TE to have a multi-TD game since Irv Smith Jr. in Week 16 of 2020.
QB Kirk Cousins has posted a passer ratings of least 100 two straight weeks. That’s the second-longest streak in the league, trailing San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo’s streak of three consecutive games.
Another Cousins note. He’s had four career games of at least 300 passing yards vs. Green Bay, with Minnesota and two with Washington.
The list:
425 – Minnesota at Green Bay, Sept. 16, 2018
375 – Washington vs. Green Bay, Nov. 20, 2016
342 – Minnesota vs. Green Bay, Nov. 25, 2018
329 – Washington vs. Green Bay, Jan. 10, 2016 (NFC Wild Card Game)
WR Adam Thielen is seven receptions away from passing Kyle Rudolph for fifth place in Vikings receptions.
The list:
Cris Carter, 1004
Randy Moss, 587
Steve Jordan, 498
Anthony Carter, 478
Kyle Rudolph, 453
Adam Thielen, 447
Since 1961, when Minnesota entered the NFL, the Vikings and Packers have each won 20 division titles and qualified for the playoffs 30 times.
Cordarelle Patterson recorded the longest play in team history, a 109-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on Oct. 27, 2013 vs. Green Bay.
