The Minnesota Vikings will be at home Sunday to face an NFC North for the second time in three games to start the season when they host the Detroit Lions at noon at U.S. Bank Stadium. The game will be televised on Fox with Brandon Gaudin on play-by-play, Brady Quinn as analyst and Megan Olivi on the sideline.
Hopefully the teams will be easier to distinguish than they were for viewers on CBS when the Vikings hosted the Lions at Metropolitan Stadium on Oct. 11, 1964.
BTW, prior to 1964 a specific announcing team was assigned to each NFL team and fans in each market would hear that team call the games each week.
However in 1964, CBS experimented with a half-and-half format for their announcers. The first half would be called by the home teams' commentators while the rest of the game would be done by the visitors' commentators.
That meant for that game the Vikings broadcast team of Herb Carneal and Clayton Tonnemaker called the game, with Lions announcers Van Patrick and Jim Morse called the second half.
Carneal and Tonnemaker probably had some difficulty in the first quarter as both teams were wearing white jerseys.
Usually, the Vikings wore their purple jerseys at home but that day they wanted to give the fans a different look and wear their road uniforms, which consisted of a white jersey and purple pants.
Unfortunately, no one told the Lions, who only brought their white uniforms to Minnesota so in the first quarter both teams wore white jerseys while a member of the Vikings equipment staff retrieved the team’s purple jerseys from the team’s office in Edina.
After the first quarter, the Vikings changed to their purple jerseys but didn't change the purple pants. That gave the team a purple over purple look for the first time in their brief history.
That made the 1964 Vikings the first team to wear a “monochrome” dark color uniform in the history of the NFL. This would not occur again until the 2001 season when the New Orleans saints wore an all-black uniform in three games during that season.
Detroit won the game 24-20 as the Lions sacked Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton nine times. Gail Cogdill scored two touchdowns for Detroit, one on a one-yard offensive fumble return and the other on a 12-yard pass from Earl Morrall.
For the Vikings, Bill Brown scored from one yard out, Paul Flatley caught a 23-yard TD pass from Tarkenton and Fred Cox kicked field goals of 32 and 42 yards.
Notable
Kirk Cousins is 8-4 in home division matchups as a Viking. Since 2018 he has thrown for 2,895 yards and 23 touchdowns with a passer rating of 109.6 at home vs. divisional opponents.
TE Irv Smith Jr. caught a two-yard TD pass from Cousins vs. Philadelphia Monday, the eighth touchdown catch of his career and his first since Dec. 25, 2020 at New Orleans.
OLB Danielle Hunter took down QB Jalen Hurts to bring his career sack total to 62.5 and mark his second straight game with a sack.
TE Johnny Mundt had the second-longest reception of his career, a 17-yarder from Cousins.
LB Jordin Hicks had an interception in the fourth quarter Monday, his first as a Viking and the 12th of his career. He leads all linebackers in interceptions since entering the league in 2015, with 12.
