There’s been a lot going on for the Martin County West softball team recently, with a lot of it away from the softball field.
The Mavericks played a couple of games at the end of last week, one in less-than-ideal weather and one against an undefeated, number one ranked team that hadn’t allowed a run in eight games.
Then came the weekend, which brought Prom, followed by the state FFA Convention for several student-athletes. After all that, the Mavericks need to get ready for an important game Tuesday against a Valley Conference and Section 2A rival.
On a rainy, windy, cold day on Thursday, the Mavericks were able to hold off Windom 11-10 at the Fox Lake Area Sports Complex.
Maddie Carlson had three hits with a double, two triples and five runs batted in for MCW. She also went the distance in the pitcher’s circle, striking out eight.
Emily Schettler, Courtney Anderson and Bailey Larson each had two hits.
On Friday, the Mavericks ran into Class 1A top-ranked United South Central and pitcher Mariah Anderson. MCW did score the first runs she’s allowed this season, but the visiting Rebels came away with a 6-2 win.
Emily Anderson had three hits for the Mavericks, Hannah Rosenberg had two hits and an RBI and Addy Wohlhuter had an RBI hit for MCW, now 6-2.
Ahead on Tuesday for Martin County West is a game against the other team hand the Mavericks a loss as Cleveland visits Welcome. The Clippers edged MCW 3-2 on April 10 in Cleveland.
The Clippers are 9-1, with their loss being to USC 11-0 last Tuesday.
That game will carry weight in the Valley Conference standings and seeding for the Section 2A tournament.
