Hobie Hedquist made his first start of the British Columbia Hockey League preseason Saturday night and stopped 21 of the 22 shots he faced as his Alberni Valley Bulldogs beat the Cowichan Valley Capitals 3-1 in Port Alberni, B.C.
The Heron Lake native is starting his second season with the Bulldogs.
Hedquist was Alberni Valley’s Most Valuable Player last season.
He led BCHL goaltenders in minutes played (2470), tied for first in wins (28) was second in shutouts (5). Hedquist was named a second team all-star and was a finalist for the Goaltender of the Year award.
His regular-season record was 28-9-4-0 had a goals-against average of 2.53 and save percentage of .909,
Hedquist, who has committed to North Dakota, decided over the summer to return to Alberni Valley.
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to play for such a great organization again this season,” said Hedquist. “This past year we were able to have an extremely successful year, and I can’t wait to get back in Port Alberni and continue what we built last year.”
Club president David Michaud was excited about the news.
“Having Hobie back means a lot to our organization,” he said. “He was a highly sought after goaltender this offseason and for him to choose the Bulldogs and the community of Port Alberni is tremendous for all involved. Whenever you can bring back your MVP, especially in a position like goalie, it adds a layer of stability that makes you feel like you have a chance each and every night to win the game.”
The Bulldogs are 2-2 in preseason games with three more to play. The regular season opens on Sept. 23.
