The New York Rangers franchise began play in the 1926-27 season.
They have played 6,669 regular-season games and 538 more in the playoffs for a total of 7,207 games.
In all those games, a Rangers defenseman had never scored four points in a single period. Until Sunday night.
K’Andre Miller had two goals and two assists as New York scored six goals in the first period on its way to a 7-0 win over the Nashville Predators at Madison Square Garden. Miller was named the Number One Star of the game.
He’s also the fourth Rangers blueliner this century to record four points in a game.
“I can’t complain,” said Miller, who is the son of 1988 Fairmont High School graduate Amy Sokoloski.
"I mean, quite literally it just felt like everything I touched was somehow finding the back of the net at the end of the play," Miller said. "I wish every game was like that. “It was pretty fun. I can’t tell you the last time something like that’s happened, but the puck was finding me. Couple good bounces. Like I said, can’t complain.”
The 23-year-old defenseman scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season to establish a new career-high. Miller has already surpassed his previous career-highs in assists (13) and points (20).
It was also the first multi-goal game of his NHL career.
“He’s coming every game,” head coach Gerard Gallant said of Miller. “Obviously, tonight’s game, K’Andre was outstanding. He wasn’t cheating, he wasn’t cheating the defensive side of the game. He made his rushes, and he made his plays and he put pucks to the net.
“I thought he was outstanding tonight and getting four points in one period is something else for him.”
The Rangers had defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-0 at home on Saturday.
They’re the sixth team in NHL history to have at least two straight shutout wins when scoring at least six goals in both games. They join the 1958-59 Montreal Canadiens (two), 1970-71 Boston Bruins (two), 1972-73 Rangers (three), 1975-76 Montreal Canadiens (two), and 1977-78 Philadelphia Flyers (two).
New York has a record of 41-19-10, good for third place in the Metropolitan Division and fifth in the Eastern Conference. The Rangers are one point behind the Toronto Maple Leafs for fourth place and home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
On Tuesday, New York plays its fifth straight home game as it hosts the Carolina Hurricanes. The Rangers then go to Raleigh, N.C. to play the Hurricanes again on Thursday.
