TRIMONT – Martin County West’s basketball teams each welcomed a highly ranked team to the Trimont gym Friday and in each case the visitors went home with a victory.
The gym was full as it was Karson Janssen Memorial Hoops for Heart Night in honor of Janssen, a 2020 MCW graduate who passed away in November.
Both boys teams were rated in Class 1A, with top-ranked Hayfield winning 50-43 over the third-ranked Mavericks.
In the girls contest, Class 1A No. 2 Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s won 59-35 over MCW.
MCW’s boys had a 28-21 halftime lead over the visiting Vikings, but Hayfield outscored the Mavericks 29-15 in the second 18 minutes.
Martin County West had two players score in double figures, with Tanner Sinn scoring 21 points and Mitch Weber 12.
Isaac Matti led Hayfield in scoring with 17 points.
The Vikings are 22-1, while the Mavericks, who were playing their fourth game in five nights, are 21-4.
MCW travels to New Ulm Friday to close out its regular season schedule vs. Minnesota Valley Lutheran.
In the girls game, Madison Mathiowitz poured in 37 points to lead St. Mary’s to its win to improve to 23-1 on the season. Mathiowitz is the leading scorer in the state as she entered the contest averaging 34.2 points per game.
Liv Borchardt led the Mavericks in scoring with nine points.
Martin County West (7-14) wraps up its regular season schedule vs. St. James Area in Sherburn on Tuesday.
