Tom Schuller says a fast start is important in a football game. His Jackson County Central did that and then some on Friday.
The Huskies put five touchdowns on the board in the first quarter (and still had 1:09 to spare) and rolled past Worthington 62-7 at Swearingen Field.
“It's important,” Schuller said on the field following the win. “The game's over in the first quarter, and then you're trying to weigh, ‘How much are you going to put your starting offense in? I told the guys, they've worked so hard in the summer, and I don't like taking them out at halftime, but I also don't like running it up either. So, it was a tough deal to have to look at those guys. But they're really good about it, and, you know, they're cheering their teammates on so that was good.”
After the 36-point first quarter, JCC added 14 more in the second quarter and while there was a fleeting thought about getting the starters a little more playing time, the Huskies used reserves throughout the second half.
“It was exciting to get everybody in again,” he said. “Those guys are working hard in practice, and you love to get them in. You’d love to do it all the time. It doesn't always work out but tonight everybody got in.”
Roman Voss ran for three TDs (9, 63 and 71 yards) and threw for two more (5 yards to Grant Freking and 71 to Ben Dahlin) for Jackson County Central. Other offensive scores came on a five-yard run by Tavion Diggs and a 44-yard run by Tate Phillips.
The Huskies had a pair of interception returns for touchdowns on defense as Isaac Hesebeck went 32 yards for a TD and Gage Johnson ran 84 yards for a touchdown with his pick.
JCC is 2-0 and will play at Blue Earth Area next Friday. The Buccaneers are 0-2 after a 60-14 loss to Triton (2-0) Friday.
