Maddie Carlson was the winning pitcher and helped her cause at the plate with a pair of hits as the Martin County West softball team defeated Sleepy Eye 8-1 Tuesday at the Fox Lake Area Sports Complex.
The nonconference win was important for Section 2A seeding purposes for the Mavericks, who have won 11 in a row and are 17-2 on the season. The Indians are 14-5.
Sleepy Eye scored a run in the top of the first but Carlson and MCW would keep the visitors off the scoreboard the rest of the way while scoring once in the half half of the first, one in the third, one in the fourth and then putting the game away with a five-run sixth inning.
In the pitcher’s circle, Carlson allowed one run on three hits, walked two and struck out nine. At the plate she had two hits and two runs batted in.
Hannah Rosenberg had three hits for the Mavericks.
Courtney Anderson had a two-run triple and Bailey Larson doubled for MCW. Getting one hit apiece were Emily Schettler, Emily Anderson, Addy Wohlhuter and Rowan Faber.
Martin County West will play New Ulm Cathedral (17-2) in the Tomahawk Valley Conference championship game at 5 p.m. Thursday at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
