Jackson County Central graduate Brett Benson, now from Bird Island, is tied for second place heading into the final day of the Northwest Amateur at Spencer Golf and Country Club.
On Saturday, play was suspended due to lightning at 5:45 p.m. Participants resumed their round at 7:30 a.m. Sunday and finished mid-morning. The first groups of flighted players then had 11 a.m. tee times.
Current University of Minnesota golfer Conor Schubring of Minnetonka is alone in first place at 9-under on qualifying rounds of 69 and 66 for a 135 total.
Benson and past Minnesota State Amateur champion Trent Peterson of Eagan are both -8 136. Benson shot 68-68 and Peterson 67-69. Peterson won the Northwest Amateur in 2013.
Three golfers are tied at -7 137, Mason Roloff of Blaine, Samuel Storey of Sioux City and 2009 champion Joshua Manske of Algona.
Benson will play the third round in a foursome with Schubring, Peterson and Roloff. The final round is scheduled for late this afternoon.
Trey Jacobson of Estherville, a former member of the Jackson Bulls amateur baseball team, will play in the Fifth Flight. He shot +5 (74-75-149) in qualifying.
Austin Olson of Jackson will play in the Sixth Flight. He was at +11 (79-76-155) in qualifying.
