GLENCOE – Jackson County Central opened its wrestling season Saturday by placing second out of 11 teams at the Don Hall Invitational.
Class 2A 11th-ranked Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran won the team title with 221 points, Class 1A No. 3 JCC was second with 215, and 1A No. 1 Kimball Area was third with 194.5 points.
The Huskies’ Payton Handevidt was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament as he won the 170-pound title.
To reach the finals, Handevidt pinned George Doherty (LeSueur-Henderson) in :31 and won by technical fall over Tanner Burmeister (Watertown Mayer-Mayer Lutheran) 18-3 in 5:28.
In the championship match, Handevidt, rated first at 160 pounds in Class 1A, won an 8-2 decision over Ashton Hanan of Kimball Area, who is rated first at 170.
JCC had two other champions.
Nolan Ambrose, rated first in the state at 113, won the 120-pound title.
After a first-round bye, he pinned Gage Somers (LeSuer-Henderson) in :59, pinned Brady Kiecker (BOLD) in 1:11 and then won a 6-2 decision over Jack Krier (Zumbrota-Mazeppa).
Logan Butzon, ranked second at 138, was the champ at 138.
Butzon pinned Miguel Arandia (GSLLP) in 2:24, won by technical fall over Marqavion Haefner (New Ulm) 28-11 in 5:33 and won a 13-6 decision over Ben Murray (Zumbrota-Mazeppa).
Jackson County Central will host Luverne and Redwood Valley in a triangular Tuesday.
