Jackson County Central scored touchdowns on three of its first six offensive plays and went to beat Windom 48-6 in South Central Silver District football Friday at Island Park in Windom.
The Huskies are 4-0 overall, while the Eagles are 0-4. It was the first district game for each team.
“I thought early the offense did a nice job,” said JCC Coach Tom Schuller. “We were able to run the ball when we wanted to. I thought Gabe and Roman were very difficult for Windom to tackle. Our offensive line did a nice job of springing them and getting them out in the open field.”
Roman Voss ran 47 yards for the first touchdown and then threw a pair of TD passes, 31 yards to Bryson Powers and 15 to Gabe Wolff and the Huskies had a 21-0 lead with 7:13 still to play in the first quarter.
“At the end of the first quarter we had the pick (Windom came up with an interception inside its own 10-yard line) and we lost our focus,” said Schuller. “I thought we played really shoddy defense in the second quarter. They got behind us on several occasions in the secondary. They only exploited one or two of them and there was five or six of them where they could have.
“And we didn’t rush the passer real well. We lost containment way too many times. Their quarterback did a nice job of running around and in a spread offense it emphasizes that we have to play our smaller kids at defensive tackle because when the quarterback is out there running around some of our big guys are not built to tackle guys like that in the open field and that’s kind of what the game has become.”
The Eagles turned the turnover into points to make it 21-6, but JCC scored two more times before the end of the half with Wolff scoring from 13 yards out and Seth Stai scoring on an 11-yard run for a 42-6 advtanage.
Jackson County Central had an opportunity to score again before the end of the half as the Huskies had a first-and-goal situation with eight seconds to play and no time outs. The Huskies threw an incomplete pass on their lone play and time expired.
Schuller said that’s something JCC needs to improve on in the event that situation comes up in a close game later this season.
“If it’s a close game that’s a big mistake at the end of the half not throwing the ball in rhythm,” Schuller commented. “I think we had eight seconds left. We told them last week if nothing’s there throw at your Aunt Margaret. Well, Aunt Margaret was open late as it turned out because we ate up the eight seconds and didn’t get a chance to try a field goal. We’re still learning on things like that.
“We’re at the halfway point of the regular season. I think we continue to improve on offense. I didn’t think we took a step defensively in fact we may have taken a step backward. I’m not real happy about that.”
Jackson County Central had 466 yards offense, 335 yards rushing and 131 passing. Windom had 66 yards on the ground and 165 in the air for 231 yards.
Voss ran for 179 yards on only five carries. He was also 6-for-14 passing for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
Wolff ran for 89 yards and a touchdown on eight tries. Powers caught two passes for 80 yards.
Weather issues interrupted practice for JCC early last week and then the next week will look a little different as well as the Huskies’ next game is not until 1 p.m. Saturday when they host Redwood Valley in their homecoming game.”
“We did have a disjointed week of practice,” Schuller said. “We got lightninged out on Monday and heated out on Tuesday and practiced indoors. We need a lot of pass skeleton. I know Redwood is going to watch this tape and lock their chops and think they’re going to throw the ball probably 60 or 70 times.”
The Cardinals are 0-4 after a 35-7 loss to Pipestone.
