Martin County West combined seven hits with five walks and four Cleveland errors to come away with a 6-1 Valley Conference win over the visiting Clippers in Valley Conference softball Tuesday at the Fox Lake Area Sports Complex in Welcome.
The win gives the Mavericks a record of 7-2 overall, 2-1 in conference play. The Class 1A eighth-ranked Clippers are 9-2 and 2-1.
“We made a couple of adjustments hitting wise,” said MCW coach Darrell Ziegler, whose team lost 3-2 at Cleveland on April 10. “In the first game we swung at a lot of high pitches out of the strike zone and we did a much better job of not doing that today (Tuesday).
“We got some hit when we needed it, they made a couple of mistakes that we took advantage of it and got some extra at bats and scored a couple of runs. We struggled a little at times this year where we’ve had one inning that we forget to do things and all of a sudden, the other team scores three or four runs.”
MCW scored runs in five of its six at-bats. The Mavericks scored one in each of the first two innings, two in the third and one more in each of the fourth and sixth frames.
Maddie Carlson was the winning pitcher as she went the distance, allowing one run on only two hits, none to any of the top six hitters in the Cleveland lineup. Carlson walked three and struck out nine.
Delaney Thompson was charged with the loss for the Clippers as she gave up six runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked five and struck out 10.
“We made a couple of nice plays,” Ziegler said.” Addy Wohlhuter made a couple of good plays on ground balls, and she had a long run after a pop up that she made a nice catch on.”
Emily Anderson had two hits including a double and had two runs batted in.
Carlson had a hit and walked twice, Cami Clow doubled, Bailey Larson had a hit an RBI and Wohlhuter also had a hit for Martin County West.
MCW plays a doubleheader vs. Madelia Thursday in Searles and then hosts Adrian-Ellsworth and Hayfield in a triangular on Saturday.
